On Tuesday, students arrived at Neary through a rainbow and along a purple carpet, a fitting entrance to Neary! This week, our students experienced moments of discovery, new friendships, acts of kindness, and the everyday choices students make to be ready, responsible, respectful, and safe.
A special thank-you to SOS for creating such a joyful welcome at our front entrance and for adding a purple carpet for students arriving by bus. The decorations helped make our opening days feel celebratory, but the real magic came from the students and staff who brought our school back to life.
Our entire school came together for our first Neary Whole School Meeting on Thursday. We celebrated our September birthdays, sending some “good vibes” their way with a wave of our hands, and talked about the people, places, and experiences that bring us joy both in and out of school. Through conversation, laughter, and shared celebration, students began building the kind of community we hope to create for one another this year: one where everyone is known, included, and able to experience joy (and of course, use complete sentences).
During Curriculum and Community Night, families had the opportunity to experience a version of this meeting and learn more about why these gatherings will be an important part of life at Neary. We hope you enjoyed being part of it!
We are especially proud of the way students have responded to our two opening priorities: focusing their attention within five seconds through the Neary 5-4-3-2-1 and using complete sentences to explain their thinking. These routines may seem simple, but practiced consistently, they build habits that create more time for learning, connection, and fun. Our Wizards are already laying a strong foundation that will pay dividends throughout this year and well beyond it.

One important addition to our new staff introductions: I inadvertently left Brooke Perry out of last week’s welcome. While she is new to Neary, she is already a familiar face to many Southborough families, having spent the past 23 years in our district, most recently at Finn. As she begins her 24th year in the district, Mrs. Perry is excited to build community and challenge learners at Neary. We are thrilled to welcome the knowledge, experience, and strong community connections she brings to our school. |
Students are learning about Neary’s band, strings, and chorus opportunities this week! Families can review the program letter for information about the program, frequently asked questions, required and suggested materials, and registration. Additional resources are available on the Neary Music website.
An informational Google Meet will be held on Tuesday, September 8, at 7:00 p.m. Registration and instrument rentals are due by Thursday, September 10. Returning students should also confirm whether they plan to continue this year. |
Lunch bunches are one form of groups offered at Neary. They are an opportunity for students to build social relationships and gain skill sets for social situations. Members of the group may be invited to help bolster their social skill set, if they are a new student, to help a child make friends, as a positive peer model, or earning recognition for engaging in exemplary Neary behaviors. This is an opportunity that includes all students at Neary School.

All Neary caregivers are invited to join Principal Tom Millett for the first Principal Coffee of the school year on Thursday, September 17, from 9:30–10:15 a.m. in the Neary cafeteria. Stop by for coffee, conversation, and an opportunity to connect as we begin a great year together! |
Our next Neary Nights event is all about bringing our community together. Neary students and their families are invited to join us for a relaxed evening of food, fun, and connection as we celebrate the start of the school year. Whether your family stays for the full evening or stops by for a short time, we hope you will join us!

The picnic is free to attend and open to the whole family. Food will be available for purchase from food trucks, with specific options shared after families RSVP. Please bring blankets or lawn chairs for your family.
New Neary merchandise will also be available for purchase, and SOS will hold a raffle. Raffle tickets will cost $5 for one ticket or $20 for five tickets.

The Hispanic and Latin Organization of Leaders in Action (HOLA) at DESE invites students to submit artwork celebrating Hispanic or Latino identity and culture. This year’s theme is “Our Diversity Is Our Strength,” and submissions may include drawings, paintings, collages, sculptures, digital illustrations, photographs, and other forms of visual art. Selected pieces will be displayed in DESE’s Board meeting rooms in honor of Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month.
Artwork may be newly created or previously completed. Families may review the flyer and submit artwork using the student art submission form by Monday, September 14.

Join us at Beals’ Preserve on Sunday, September 13, from 3:00–5:00 p.m. for a closing poetry walk celebrating Art on the Trails. Neary’s installation, Phases, created by our current fifth- and sixth-grade students, will be the final stop at approximately 4:30 p.m. Families are welcome to arrive late and meet the group at the installation. |
Help us support the Southborough Food Pantry throughout September! Each classroom has been assigned a requested item, and students are invited to wear a crazy hat and bring a donation on Neary Spirit Day, Friday, September 18. Donations will be accepted through Friday, September 25. |
Week 2 of the roofing project is complete! The contractor made good progress this week, completing an additional 4,000 square feet of roofing. Noise during the school day remained manageable, as the contractor continues to schedule louder activities before school begins or after school hours whenever possible.
Work above classroom areas began on Friday with minimal interruption. The process was well managed. We did not need to relocate any classroom instruction to other areas of the building.
This week’s rain did result in a few active roof leaks. The contractor responded quickly and completed the necessary remediation. Those areas will be closely monitored and tested during our next significant rainfall. These leaks were all in known places of the building.
Good weather continues to be our best friend during this project. This week presented a few weather-related challenges, but the contractor was able to regain ground with a very productive end to the week.
The crew will take a break for the holiday weekend and will return on Tuesday to continue the work.
